Assessed national implementation of biodiversity-related MEAs and advised public institutions on legal, institutional and reporting constraints, including measures to reduce the risk of CITES trade restrictions. Produced a governance assessment and baseline dashboard for coordinated and synergistic implementation, drawing on consultations with focal points, ministries, civil society and protected-area managers.

Advised Madagascar on aligning its NBSAP with the Global Biodiversity Framework, facilitated intersectoral consultations across government, civil society and the private sector, and strengthened the capacities of 160 national experts. Contributed to the formulation and validation of national targets, actions and indicators, and developed a strategic dashboard for monitoring implementation and financing.

Conceived and led the development and international rollout of DaRT, coordinating UNEP, MEA secretariats, national administrations and technical partners. The platform strengthens institutional coordination, monitoring and knowledge management while enabling information to be reused across implementation and reporting processes. Its deployment included training, workshops and technical support across multiple regions.

About Eric Wiedmer

Dr Eric Wiedmer

Dr Eric Wiedmer brings together environmental policy, institutional governance and practical implementation. With more than 20 years of experience in public administration, international cooperation and consulting, he advises governments and organisations on turning complex biodiversity commitments into workable systems, tools and processes.

He specialises in biodiversity policy, multilateral environmental agreements and institutional governance. Combining scientific expertise with policy analysis and hands-on delivery, he helps institutions clarify responsibilities, strengthen coordination and establish effective systems for implementation, monitoring, evaluation, reporting and compliance.

Through NatureConsult, he has supported governments, international organisations and development partners across Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. His assignments range from institutional assessments and implementation guidance to monitoring dashboards, national reports, capacity building, training and participatory stakeholder processes.

He holds a PhD in Natural Sciences and a Master’s degree in Biology from the University of Bern. He works in English, French and German.
